What is an Online Time Tracker?
An Online Time Tracker is a browser-based stopwatch and logging utility that helps you monitor exactly how much time you spend on specific tasks, projects, or client work. It provides a running timer and allows you to log sessions into an exportable timesheet.
Why Track Your Time?
Accurate time tracking is essential for freelancers billing by the hour, students managing study sessions, and professionals striving to improve their productivity. By keeping a precise log of your activities, you can identify time-sinks, improve your estimates, and ensure you are compensated accurately for your work.
How to Use the Stopwatch & Logger
Enter a task name and click the "Play" button to start the timer. You can pause and resume the timer as needed. When you are finished with the task, click "Stop & Log" to record the session into your local timesheet. You can accumulate multiple sessions and export the entire log as a CSV file for your records.
Pros and Cons
| ✅ Advantages | ⚠️ Limitations |
|---|---|
| Requires no software installation, accounts, or monthly fees | Timer stops if the browser tab is forcefully closed or crashes |
| Provides a simple, distraction-free interface for deep work | Logs are stored locally; clearing browser data will delete them |
| Allows tagging and accumulating multiple sessions throughout the day | Cannot sync automatically across multiple devices (e.g. phone to desktop) |
| Exports directly to CSV for easy import into Excel or payroll systems | Does not monitor screen activity or take screenshots like invasive trackers |

Frequently Asked Questions
The timer uses Date.now() differences rather than counting interval ticks. The setInterval fires every second to update the display, but the actual elapsed duration is always computed as Date.now() - sessionStartTime. This makes it immune to tab throttling or system clock drift that would cause tick-counting timers to desynchronize over long sessions.
Yes. The session start timestamp and current task label are saved to localStorage when you start the timer. If you close the tab while the timer is running and reopen the page, the timer will resume from where it was left off and show the correct elapsed time. Completed sessions are also saved to localStorage.
Click the "Export CSV" button to download all completed sessions as a CSV file. Each row contains the task label, start time, end time, and duration in hours and minutes. You can open this in Excel, Google Sheets, or any CSV-compatible tool.
This tool supports one active timer at a time (like a stopwatch). To track multiple tasks simultaneously, open the tool in multiple browser tabs. Each tab maintains its own independent timer and session log in localStorage.
