What is a UPI QR Code?
A UPI QR Code is a quick-response barcode formatted specifically for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system used in India. It encodes a merchant or individual's Virtual Payment Address (VPA / UPI ID), payee name, and optionally, a predefined payment amount.
Why Generate Custom UPI QR Codes?
Freelancers, small business owners, and event organizers can use custom UPI QR codes to collect payments instantly. By embedding a specific amount and transaction note directly into the QR code, you eliminate the chance of the payer entering the wrong amount, making the checkout process frictionless.
How to Create a Payment QR Code
Enter your valid UPI ID (e.g., yourname@bank) and your payee name. You can optionally lock in a specific currency amount and add a transaction note. The QR code updates in real-time. Scan it with any UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) to verify it, then download the PNG to print or share online.
Pros and Cons
| ✅ Advantages | ⚠️ Limitations |
|---|---|
| Allows instant, frictionless payments directly from bank to bank | Only works within the Indian banking ecosystem via UPI apps |
| Eliminates typing errors by pre-filling the exact amount and payee | Does not confirm whether the payment was actually successful |
| Zero setup fees or merchant transaction costs compared to credit cards | Cannot handle complex dynamic pricing or cart systems natively |
| Generates a static QR code that can be printed permanently | Users must have a registered UPI app (GPay, PhonePe) installed on their phone |

Frequently Asked Questions
A UPI ID (also called a Virtual Payment Address or VPA) is a unique identifier used in India's Unified Payments Interface. It looks like a username@bankhandle (e.g., yourname@okicici or business@paytm). Scanning a QR code generated from a UPI VPA instantly pre-fills all payment details in any UPI app like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM.
The standard UPI deep-link URI is: upi://pay?pa=UPI_ID&pn=PAYEE_NAME&am=AMOUNT&tn=NOTE&cu=INR. The "pa" parameter is the UPI ID, "pn" is the payee name shown in the app, "am" is the pre-filled amount (optional), and "tn" is a transaction note. All values are URL-encoded.
Yes. If you leave the Amount field empty, the QR code will open the payment app but allow the payer to enter any amount they choose. This is useful for tip jars, donation links, or situations where the amount varies per transaction.
Any UPI-enabled app can scan this QR code, including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, and any other NPCI-compliant UPI app. The QR code follows the official NPCI UPI URI specification.
