What is FBR Salary Income Tax in Pakistan?

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is Pakistan's apex tax authority responsible for collecting federal taxes under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. For salaried individuals — those who receive more than 50% of their total income in the form of salary, wages, or pay from an employer — the FBR uses a progressive slab-based system to determine annual tax liability.

Unlike a flat tax rate, the slab system ensures that only income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate. Lower-income earners pay less (or nothing), while higher earners contribute progressively more. This calculator applies the official Finance Act rates for each fiscal year, giving you an accurate estimate in seconds — with no sign-up required.

How the FBR Slab System Works

Pakistan's income tax is structured around income brackets called tax slabs. Each slab defines a range of annual income, a fixed base tax already computed for amounts up to that bracket's entry point, and a marginal rate applied only to income exceeding the lower bound of that bracket.

Formula: Tax = Fixed Tax + ((Taxable Annual Income − Excess Over Threshold) × Rate ÷ 100)
Example (2026-27): Annual salary = PKR 1,800,000 → Slab 3: Fixed PKR 6,000 + (1,800,000 − 1,200,000) × 11% = PKR 6,000 + PKR 66,000 = PKR 72,000/year
Monthly deduction: PKR 72,000 ÷ 12 = PKR 6,000/month

The employer deducts this amount each month and deposits it directly with FBR — this is called withholding tax on salaries. You must still file your annual income tax return to confirm your liability or claim any refund.

What Your Tax Figures Mean

Tax Filing Obligation

Even if tax is deducted at source, salaried individuals earning above the exempt threshold must file an annual income tax return with FBR by September 30 each year. Filing makes you a "filer" — which carries significant benefits in Pakistan including lower withholding rates on banking transactions and property purchases.

Reduce Your Tax Liability

Salaried individuals can reduce taxable income through approved deductions including contributions to approved pension funds, voluntary pension schemes (VPS), and charitable donations to approved organizations under Section 61. Consult a tax professional to identify all eligible deductions before filing.

Filer vs Non-Filer

FBR's tax laws impose higher withholding rates on non-filers for banking transactions, property transfers, vehicle purchases, and other activities. Becoming an active filer by submitting your annual return is often financially worthwhile even for those below the taxable threshold.

Salary Negotiations

Use this calculator when negotiating salary packages. Understanding your effective tax rate helps you ask for the right gross salary to achieve your desired take-home pay. For example, moving from PKR 200K/month to PKR 250K/month may push you into a higher slab — this tool makes that impact transparent.

Frequently Asked Questions

A salaried individual is anyone who derives more than 50% of their total income from salary — including wages, pay, compensation, and benefits received from an employer as per Section 12 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

For salaried employees, tax is deducted at source by the employer on a monthly basis (monthly salary × 12 = annualized). The employer deposits it with FBR and issues a salary certificate. You still file an annual income tax return.

No. This calculator computes only the federal income tax on salaried income as per FBR slabs. Provincial taxes, Zakat deductions, and other levies are not included. Consult a tax professional for a complete picture.

For fiscal year 2026-27, annual salaried income up to PKR 600,000 (PKR 50,000/month) is fully exempt from income tax — the rate is 0%.

The calculator uses the official FBR tax slab rates published in the Finance Act for each fiscal year. While we strive for accuracy, always verify with official FBR resources or a certified tax advisor before filing.

When you select "Monthly Salary", the tool multiplies your input by 12 to get the gross annual salary used for tax calculation. The results always show both monthly and annual figures regardless of your input mode.
